S.B.I. Ltd implements civil engineering, development and construction projects. It is involved throughout the world in a wide range of construction operations, including public works, roads, highways and bridges. The company has a long history of working in Nigeria and last year was awarded a major contract to rebuild and widen the highway connecting Lagos to Ibadan.
This new major project involves widening the road, rebuilding the Ibadan-Shagamu section of the highway, rebuilding and maintaining 14 overpasses and bridges, as well as improving drainage; this jobsite is extremely important since the highway carries a huge volume of traffic, and for this reason the upgrade work is crucial.
With its 8 asphalt plants, our customer was already well represented in Nigeria, but for this huge project it has decided to buy a new high level asphalt plant with large production capacity (200 tph) and, above all, the possibility to reuse RAP (Recycled Asphalt Pavement) in order to optimize the production costs while paying the maximum attention to HMA final quality.
The technical team carefully analyzed all the opportunities offered on the market before choosing a Marini Top Tower 3000 plant. Now, they have the possibility to optimize the production costs and can integrate the plant whenever necessary with a range of options, given that Top Tower is already pre-set for up-grading to work with all new technologies.
Just a few examples: the burner runs on diesel oil and heavy fuel oil, but it is already pre-set for adjustment to natural gas; the plant is already supplied with the fiber dosing system, but can be completed with the liquid additive kit; the HMA silo is equipped with 2 compartments, but can be easily expanded to 4 compartments.
Special attention has been given to the Bitumen Park: in its work specifications, S.B.I. has to utilize standard but also modified bitumen, and it is not always easy to find the right quantity of bitumen when it is needed (especially in Nigeria); for this reason they have decided to supplement the plant with a Polymer Modified Bitumen Plant to produce Modified bitumen (thanks to this polymer modification of bitumen they can meet all high capacity requirements of road construction) only when requested and in the right quantity. The Bitumen Park is completed by 11 bitumen tanks, 2 hot boilers and 2 fuel tanks. In this way, problems with HMA production due to the lack of bitumen have been avoided.
A considerable amount of time has been dedicated to RAP analysis: customer has chosen the RAP feeding line into the mixer because the technicians prefer to re-control all the aggregates with the screening section (unfortunately quarries in Nigeria have not reached the right quality control level); in order to be sure about the final HMA quality, RAP is pre-screened, selected and controlled in a separated and dedicated area.
The controlled RAP (2 different selections) can be metered in a perfect way inside the plant up to 25-30% (thanks to 2 RAP feeders, a feeding belt, a dedicated elevator and a weighing belt) ensuring a high control of the grading curve.
The dryer is also supplied with a recycling ring because S.B.I. has requested the possibility to complete the plant with the second line up to the dryer; at a later stage, it can be decided to integrate the plant and to work with the 2 lines at the same time in order to reach a very high percentage of RAP (up to 45%).
I’m very proud of the relationship between S.B.I. and Marini. We have been achieving success for each of our projects during the last decade and I’m sure this one will be brilliantly completed. It involves our new line of asphalt plants, the edge of our engineering investments

Another key point in the final choice was the reliability of the Marini Plant and the level of Marini Service. Especially in countries so far away, it is very important to have a reliable partner that can guarantee Service levels to a good standard.

This partnership, between two companies at the top in their field, has created a new model jobsite, an example not only for the Nigerian but for the whole market.
